NOT a week passes by without the goodwill of the Ipswich community being called upon to throw their support behind a worthy, awareness raising cause.

Everything from eating healthy, to the dangers of technology and even composting are all deemed worthy to enough to focus our attention on for seven days.

There is a new addition to the list this year, but finally it seems to be a week worth getting behind - Queensland Beer Week.

The inaugural event starts on July 16, tantalising the tastebuds of craft beer advocates who have taken it upon themselves to create uniquely flavoured beers.

Queensland Beer Week co-ordinator Mark Midro said beer is evolving along with its perception among the general public.

Similar events have been held in Melbourne and Sydney in recent years and organisers felt it was time Queenslanders had a week to celebrate their beverage of choice.

Brewers Choice owner David Kitchen said the interest in craft beers had steadily grown as punters tired of traditional brewers' marketing ploys.

"There'll be hundreds of beers to taste. Everything from the state's best home brew on tap and the winners of home brew competition will be going on tap at some of the bars," he said.

This includes the Yamanto Tavern, which will host a Tap Takeover from July 20 to 22, featuring some rare craft beers.

"There is a very strong growth in craft beer going on. There has been a marked increase in craft beer consumption. It started 10 years ago in the states. It's heading in the right direction here, but we are lagging behind a bit.

"We are only at the beginning of the growth. There will be more over the next two or three years.

"There's a whole range of other types of beers that haven't been around too much."
