Artist's unique take on fashion
ARTIST Helen Newton's award-winning clothing and accessories are currently on display at Cafe Jacqui's and they are not clothes you would typically see in your local department store.
Every costume contains at least one item made from recyclable material.
One piece she made from ring pulls and another from video tape.
"People collect them for me," said Mrs Newton.
"I try not to waste anything.
"If someone gives me something I try to think of a way to use it."
Mrs Newton has used everything from broken watches to milk bottle caps.
"I've used embroidery cotton and then French knitted it with an embellishing machine," she said.
The display will remain in Cafe Jacqui's for the remainder of the Jumpers and Jazz Festival.
Exhibit organiser Dorothy Devine said she was hoping to put another exhibition on next year as well.
