BROOKE Nash has the world in the palm of her hands as she prepares to take on the Miss Universe Australia final.

The 20-year-old Mackay beauty wowed the judges during the preliminary state final, which was held at Jupiters Casino at the Gold Coast on Tuesday.

But the scene is nothing new for Miss Nash, who also made the national final last year.

Despite experiencing stardom at such a young age, Miss Nash still has her feet firmly on the ground - in Mackay.

"Really nothing has changed (for me) in Mackay," she said.

"I'm still close with my school friends.

"I've also met so many people from all around the world."

Having a year's worth of experience under her belt, she is not as nervous at the thought of competing at the national level as she was last year.

"This year I had a talk with judges and they told me I had improved significantly since last year," she said.

"They said I have so much more confidence, that my walk and posing is great and I didn't have anything to fault.

"But I need to work on my public speaking.

The Mackay woman's role model is superstar Miranda Kerr.

"I know that's a typical answer but she's who I used to go on and watch on YouTube before I started modelling.

"She always holds herself really well, talks well, is a typical Aussie girl and hasn't changed her morals.

"She came from a small country town, like me."

Her parents, Elisa and John Nash, are proud of Brooke's achievements.

"We're over the moon about it and we wish her all the luck in the world," Mrs Nash said.

"She loves it, absolutely loves the modelling industry and hopefully something becomes of it because it's a very hard industry."

Miss Nash will spend the next six weeks preparing for the national competition.
