City's bands to unleash excitement on the stage

TWO acclaimed bands with Ipswich roots will take exciting new material to stages around Brisbane this weekend.

Drawn From Bees will live up to their art rock reputation with a theatre-based album launch tonight, and Hungry Kids of Hungary will play one of their famously energetic gigs on Sunday.

Drawn From Bees a four-piece band with members from Ipswich, received high rotation on Triple J with their 2009 single Long Tooth Setting Sun.

Since then, the band has toured extensively overseas and across Australia to celebrate numerous EP, single and album releases.

They are eager to unveil their unique blend of music and theatre tomorrow night.

"We're playing with a 14-piece mini-orchestra with trumpets, violins, and many more instruments," Drawn From Bees' Stew Riddle said.

"The show will launch The May King and His Paper Crown.

"It's split up into two acts, and narrators will actually tell the story of the May King. We've got projections by our artist friend that will run during the show, too."

Stew said he was looking forward to cementing the band's status as an "art rock" group.

"We've always enjoyed people referring to us as art rock, so we thought why not try and put on a proper theatre show," he said.

"This will be the only show of its kind on the tour; we'll go back to standard gigs when we head north."

The seated show will run at the Powerhouse Theatre from 7.30pm.

Tickets cost $35 at brisbanepowerhouse.org.

Pop four-piece the Hungry Kids of Hungary will perform as part of Valley Fiesta on Sunday.

Hungry Kids of Hungary also has strong ties to Ipswich, with members having grown up in Peak Crossing and surrounds.

The free show will celebrate the release of the band's latest single, Sharp Shooter.

Hungry Kids will perform from 2.30pm on the Valley Mall stage on Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley.
