Coal project could bring jobs boom

ALMOST 3000 jobs could be created if a plan for a $4.2 billion coal project near Alpha wins approval from the State Government.

The AMCI and Alpha Coal join venture had its environmental impact study released on Wednesday by the Queensland Coordinator-General.

Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said should the mine go ahead it would be a create around 2900 jobs during the construction and operation phases.

"The proposed project has an open cut and underground mining operation with an estimated mine life of 33 years and, if approved, could mine up to 17 million tonnes of coal a year for the global export market," he said.

"The AMCI and Alpha Coal joint venture has advised it will employ around 1600 people during the two-year construction phase of the project and up to 1290 workers when the mine is operational."

The planned site is 170km west of Emerald.
