Cops halt drug runners across the southern Darling Downs

POLICE have put a major dent in drug trafficking across the southern Darling Downs with 80kg in marijuana seized within a week.

A vehicle stopped for a random breath test south of Goondiwindi in New South Wales was found to contain 56kg of marijuana with a street value of more than $1 million.

It came just a week after police found 24kg of marijuana worth half a million dollars in a vehicle travelling on the same stretch of the Newell Hwy.

"Within a week we have cleared 80-odd kilograms of cannabis with an estimated street value of in excess of $1.5 million," Barwon Inspector Robert Dunn said,

"This is a warning police will stop and search a vehicle, anytime of day or night."

Two men, a 30-year-old and 37-year-old, were charged with supplying a commercial quantity of an illegal drug, dealing with property suspected of being the proceeds of crime and possessing a prohibited drug in relation to the latest bust.

Meanwhile, a police raid on a Southern Downs home has uncovered about 100 small cannabis plants.

A man is expected to be charged this week after the raid on a College Rd home in Stanthorpe on Friday afternoon.
