Copycat thieves warned against hopping on big frog

WITH the recent theft and reappearance of the Giant Bowen mango Warwick police officers want to assure residents they are keeping the town's favourite frog safe.

Increasing patrols in the Federation Park area, local Police officers are concerned about a copy cat crime targeting Tiddalik .

"We have just got to HOP that he doesn't get taken,'' Constable Jim Doyle said.

Constable Doyle also cited the TJ Burns statue at the centre of town as another possible target.

"Tiddalik is in a high traffic area so the chances of him being taken without anyone noticing are quite low. But if that is the case we will leap to the rescue," he said.

Truck drivers, usually quite good source of information for the police force, will also be able to keep an eye out as they cross the Cunningham Highway Bridge.

The three story high mango was located yesterday morning behind the Bowen Tourist Information Centre - from where it disappeared earlier this week.

Nando's, a fast food chain, has since claimed responsibility for the theft.

It promised in a statement to "take good care of the mango, and would return it to its rightful position soon(ish)".

It is rumoured that the Southern Downs Regional council are looking into a croaking device to hide the landmark from thieves.
