Cycling's a breeze for 80 year old

Noel Newton, 80, still cycles between 50 and 100 kilometres every day.

FOR someone who just rode almost 30 kilometres on his bike, Noel Newton looks pretty relaxed and at ease.

It makes sense considering his usual 60km ride from his Newtown home to Wyreema and back is more to his liking.

The truly remarkable thing about Mr Newton, who turned 80 yesterday, is he tackles the ride without a second thought nearly every day.

"This is just what I'm doing until I get fit again," he said.

"I've been a bit crook lately so I haven't been riding as much as I would like.

"Normally I would try and ride about 100km every day."

The energy and spark the avid cyclist shows for his beloved sport is infectious as he begins telling me of his love of life on two wheels.

"I've been cycling for most of my life," he said.

"I was part of the junior cycling club at Stanthorpe when I was about 13 years old but it was shut down and I had no choice but to join the professional club.

"I used to run marathons as well but I finished a race one day and just said 'that's enough of this' and never ran one again."

But it's clear as Mr Newton shows me his "wet and cold weather training room" that the wheels of his bikes are showing no signs of slowing just yet.

Inside the room is a collection of his old bikes and one in particular which stands out in the centre of the room.

It's his old road racer, a sporting relic from the past, fastened to a stationary roller on the floor and positioned directly in front of an old television set.

It takes pride of place in the room as if a testament to his life of cruising the bitumen.

"I'll sit in here and ride when it's too cold or wet to go out," he said.
