Doctors working to address Australian mental health crisis

THERE were more than 13 million mental health visits to doctors around the country in 2010-11, according to figures released on World Mental Health Day on Wednesday.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare revealed general practitioners received 13.9 million visits from Australians with a mental health issue in 2010-11.

Institute data also showed depression, anxiety and sleep disturbance were the three most common mental health problems raised with doctors.

There were also about 31.1 million prescriptions for mental health related problems issued in 2010-11, and two-thirds of those prescriptions were for anti-depressants.
