Dying Dexter bounces back to life

A YEAR ago, miniature ridgeback cross pup Dexter was far from a picture of health.

Found wandering the bushland near Lake Clarendon last August, Dexter had been savaged by mites so badly his coat was all but gone and skin so tender it split when touched.

The eight-month-old was in desperate need of care.

He was initially treated by Gatton Veterinary Surgery and was taken in by Greys 4 Pets president Elaine Green at her Coominya animal shelter.

After a year-long recovery, Dexter has been nursed back to health and is ready for a new home.

Ms Green said Dexter's condition had deteriorated so much they couldn't distinguish his breed. "You couldn't pick what breed he was because he was that bad. He had no hair and all his skin was split," she said.

"He was up in the forest in a bad area and he was just abandoned and somebody found him and brought him into the Gatton Vet Surgery.

"It's the worst I have ever come across in the seven years of the shelter."

Since Dexter was rescued by a good Samaritan.

"He's a completely different dog. He's got a full coat and he's so happy because he's never felt so good," Ms Green said.

"He's very outgoing. He's quite a cheeky little bugger. For what he has gone through it's great to have that kind of temperament."

Ms Green said he would suit a family with older children.

She cares for 48 dogs at her shelter, which is in constant need of donations.

Among the items required to care for the dogs is food, collars, bedding and meat.

If anyone is interested in adopting Dexter or making donations, call Ms Green on 5426 4567 or 0409037576.
