AUSTRALIA'S number one women's beach volleyball team of Louise Bawden and Becchara Palmer has lost a tight group encounter against Germany's Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig.

In their opening match, the Australians gave themselves hope after coming from behind to level the three-set match, but the Germans proved too strong in the decider.

Playing catch-up early in the match after losing the opening set 21-18, Bawden and Palmer forced the Germans into a third set after rallying 21-19 in the second.

However, Goller and Ludwig steadied themselves in the decider, capitalising on Australian mistakes and taking the match 15-8 in the final set.
