Hendra virus vaccine released

An Australian-developed vaccine protecting horses against the deadly Hendra virus is now available.

The serum, sold commercially as Equivac, is described by equine experts as a 'significant tool' in the fight against the killer disease.

Horse lovers in the Lockyer and Brisbane Valleys will be among the first to inoculate their animals, with local vets set to participate in the first release of the drug.

Gatton horse specialist Nathan Anthony says the vaccine provides owners of with some control over the flying fox-borne disease.

"This vaccine will be the most effective tool we have at our disposal to mitigate the risks the Hendra virus presents to the equine community," Dr Anthony says.
