IN WHAT could only be described as a labour of love, one former Warwick High School (WHS) teacher has spent about 201 hours creating a masterpiece of quilted proportions.

After 33 years as a teacher, Lesley Ellevsen will now leave another legacy at WHS.

WHS 100th birthday commemorative quilt designer and maker Ms Ellevsen said the school provided all the inspiration she needed.

"One day when I was walking in the main door of the school I turned and looked to the right and there was a section of wall with sandstone blocks and bricks in between and that was when I knew how I was going to do it," she said.

"I wanted to replicate that."

There were various elements Ms Ellevsen wanted and managed to include in the quilt.

"The main thing that I wanted was a timeline - when buildings were built, school songs written and positions such as school nurse were first appointed," she said.

"I also included a list of the principals, older and more recent photos of the school, the past and present school and sporting house badges and colours and a map of the current feeder schools and a list of the ones that have closed.

"I wanted it to be seen on several levels - from a long way back it just looks like a brick wall but as you come closer the is more detail."

Committee chairperson Janet Reid said a quilt was always part of the 100th birthday celebration plans.

"We wanted to record the history of the school and knew a quilt would allow for that to happen," Mrs Reid said.
