How I caught my Lion with the help of online dating

LESS than a week after meeting me online - Lion Goldsworthy Googled my name to check I wasn't a crazy.

And up popped my seven-week Looking for Love series, which I wrote for the Daily last year.

Most men would have heard alarm bells ringing, and start running for the hills.

But as I quickly found out, he is not most guys.

And I am most certainly not like most girls, which is why we work.

We have been together for seven months and to say things have progressed well is the understatement of the year.

We have moved in together, "met the in-laws", bought a Wii together and have made our commitment to each other in the form of beautiful rings.

I never would have guessed ticking a few boxes and filling in your likes and dislikes on an online dating site could provide you with true love.

But it turns out the ads you see on TV, that say you can meet your Prince Charming with just a few clicks of your mouse, are actually real.

Of course, I had tried online dating several times in the past five years, with more horrifying experiences, creepy and sleazy guys and no second dates than one girl could handle.

But it only takes one person to change all that.

I encourage anyone who is looking for love, whether you have never tried online dating before or have in the past and it didn't turn out well - to give it a shot.

If you are not keen on the nightclub scene, losing hope in meeting someone in a serendipitous way and sick of being set up on blind dates by your pitying married friends - online dating may be your answer.

There are lots of online sites out there, a lot I have never tried, but the three I used were POF, eHarmony, RSVP.

Lion and I met on POF and all it took was a message from him saying "Hi, you look like a nice person, and we seem to have a lot in common. I would like the chance to make a new friend and if something more eventuates that is great - if not - you can never have enough friends".

Although the modern-day love story is less unexpected than a fairytale filled with pumpkin carriage rides and glass slippers - it is real and true - and it lasts.

Do's and don'ts of online dating

  • Don't lie
  • Do message people first and be specific with what you want
  • Don't be scared to move the conversation along from online to your mobile phone
  • Meet in a public place
  • Don't fall for corny pick-up lines
  • Do try different sites simultaneously
  • Don't disclose personal information
  • Use an appropriate photo
  • Don't behave like a kid in a candy store full of online temptations
