In case of emergency, don't call me, call a paramedic

OPINION: I AM not a good person to have around in an emergency.

I panic far too easily and my mind instantly skips forward to the worst-case scenario.

You have a headache? Could be a brain tumour.

Any sign of a fever and I am googling "what to do when diagnosed with Ebola".

I know it is ridiculous but I can't help it - I also blame my kids.

Before becoming a parent I considered myself to be a somewhat rational person but I barely remember what that is like.

The fear of something happening to your children has the potential to turn you into a paranoid lunatic.

But it has also made me appreciate and admire the people who are able to hold it together in those kinds of situations.

Another thing that happens when you have kids (ok, boys) is your dealings with doctors, paramedics and nurses skyrockets.

When my then-five-year-old crashed his motorbike; split his head running away from a daddy long legs; or was shivering through a 40-degree fever I was neither calm nor collected.

Those are the times I am utterly reliant on people like paramedic Danielle Almond to hold it together and save the day.

I hate to imagine a world without these types of heroes and admire them for doing such an important and undoubtedly difficult job.
