It's all geek to me

Rob Williams is having more and more trouble separating nerds and geeks.

TODAY is the International Day of the Geek, but take extra special care not to confuse those who are nerds, and those who are geeks.

I made this mistake yesterday on Twitter when I sent out a request to find Rocky's biggest geek.

"Chasing Rockhampton's biggest geek: All Dungeons and Dragons playing, socks with sandals wearing, Star Wars loving Rocky geeks get (in contact) with us," my Tweet read.

But I was pulled up short when another Twitter user took offence at my claims, stating that under strictly defined criteria I had in fact requested a nerd and not a geek.

Confused, I wanted to sort out this definition once and for all.

I went in search of someone who could tell me the difference between those who are nerds and those who are geeks, and what better place to find such a person than a comic book store.

Rob Williams owns Millennium Comics and Collectables in Rockhampton.

He is a self-professed nerd but said the line between nerds, geeks and even the rest of society has become harder to define.

"Basically now everyone has their smartphones and stuff like that, so I think we have all become geeks in one way or another," he said.

So if you have an inner geek waiting to burst out, as Mr Williams claims, today is the day to let it shine.

International Geek Pride Day came about in 2006 when 300 geeks in Madrid demonstrated their pride by forming a human Pacman.

Nerd v geek

You're a geek if you think:

  • Being a Harry Potter fan is neither necessary nor sufficient to make you a geek.
  • Batman is much cooler than Superman.
  • Lego makes the best toys in the world.
  • The MythBusters have the best jobs in the world.
  • Video games are art.
  • Vampires do not sparkle.
  • Growing old is mandatory; growing up is not.
