Kevin keen to improve stadium grub

THINGS can change quickly in the MasterChef kitchen.

One day you're hot, the next you're off the boil.

That was the case for Kevin Perry, the first contestant eliminated from the reality cooking show's Top 24.

Perry was the first amateur cook selected from the Top 50, and sadly his time on the show was cut short after losing all three pasta-themed rounds in tonight's elimination challenge.

"I've made pasta at home several times, so when the challenge was issued I was pretty comfortable with that," he said.

"It's one thing to cook for your mates but it's another thing entirely when you've got international food critics, restaurateurs and the like looking at your food."

The 34-year-old casino marketer said the highlight of his short time on the show was the dish he cooked to earn his spot in the Top 24.

"To think a dish that I make in my own backyard is what put me through the MasterChef Top 24 is mind blowing," he said.

The keen rugby player, who is Canadian, plans to marry his passions for food and sport in a new campaign aimed at improving stadium food.

"Why is the burger that I get in Townsville the same that I get in Sydney? Does it have to be that way?" he said.

"One good thing about me leaving the show early is that I did have time to spend hours talking to people outside of stadiums. It became very obvious to me very quickly that there are a lot of people who feel the same way as me.

"The last thing you want to be doing is getting caught in a line up and missing the first five or 10 minutes of the second half….the food should add to the experience."

Tomorrow night on MasterChef, Gary Mehigan and George Calombaris host a seafood-inspired MasterClass.

Phillipa Grogan from Phillipa's Bakery in Melbourne also teaches the contestants the art of bread making.

MasterChef Australia airs week days at 7pm and Sundays at 7.30pm on Ten.
