WE still don't know where he will be playing next year.

But we do know Harry Kewell is the greatest ever Australian footballer.

At least that's what a panel of players and commentators, plus more than 15,000 fans, have decided.

Announced at a function in Sydney to raise funds for the Johnny Warren Football Foundation, Kewell said he was blown away to be named the best of the best this country has produced.

"I'm humbled by the award and very grateful, especially given that the public have had such a say in the final result and the number of great footballers this country has produced over the years," Kewell said from England. "To be named among such great players in the greatest ever Australian team, both past and current, is something I will never forget."

Kewell was selected as a striker alongside former Socceroo teammate Mark Viduka and past great Ray Baartz who was signed by Manchester United as a teenager before going on to play 48 times for Australia, scoring 18 goals.

The midfield was made up of Johnny Warren, Ned Zelic and Tim Cahill, while Lucas Neill, Joe Marston, Craig Moore and Alan Davidson comprised the defence.

Not surprisingly, Socceroo and Fulham shot stopper Mark Schwarzer was named Australia's greatest goalkeeper.
Matildas captain Cheryl Salisbury was also deservedly named Australia's greatest female player.

The toughest position to settle may have been the coach.

In the end it went to Dutchman Guus Hiddink who guided the Socceroos to the knockout stage of 2006 World Cup in Germany, ahead of contenders including Rale Rasic who took Australia to its first World Cup finals in 1974.
