THE cooler conditions mean there are some quality green leafy vegetables to cook this week with Asian vegetables, cabbage, spinach and silverbeet in their prime.
Team them with excellent quality and cheap onions, potato, sweet potato, pumpkin, zucchini, beans, beetroot and carrots. Green capsicums are the best eating and cheap but the red and yellow varieties are of mixed quality. Squash is expensive, and sweet corn improving in quality but its price is higher.
Cauliflower and broccoli are value for money. Australian asparagus is expensive with the best eating the thinner stalks compared to the medium to larger ones that are woody to eat and may have furry tips.
Tomatoes remain of mixed quality with the pick for price and consistency being truss and cherry tomato varieties. Cucumbers and shallots have firmed in price but celery, green leafy lettuce and mixed salad is of excellent condition and cheap. Avocadoes are varied in quality and their price has firmed.
The best apples to eat this week are royal gala and the smaller pink lady fruit. Williams and beurre bosc pears are being replaced by the yellow skinned, sweet-eating packham variety.
Banana quality is improving but prices have firmed. Strawberries are also improving but are expensive. Look for great quality and cheap imperial mandarins, sweeter Australian navel oranges and plenty of cheap lemons and limes.
Black and crimson coloured grapes are better eating than the green varieties, which are of mixed quality.
Kiwi fruit has firmed in price, rockmelon and watermelon will remain expensive for a few more weeks but pawpaw has reduced in price, with the red variety the best tasting.
