FOR 26 years, Allan and Terrie Miles of Harrisville have been pounding the pavement, running marathons and races across the state.

They made the trip to Warwick at the weekend to take part in the Pentath-run.

Mr Miles said he enjoyed the cross country event because of the unpredictability of the course.

"I really enjoy all the ups and downs, ins and outs," he said.

The couple met in the army many years ago and soon decided to take up running together.

But it was a competitive streak that made Mr Miles determined to train.

"My brother-in-law and I had a bet on who could run around the block, which was 8km, and I lost," Mr Miles said.

"So then I decided I wanted to start running."

The fit pair take part in the Gold Coast Marathon or half-marathon every year and have for the past 26 years.

"Once you start, you just get hooked," Mr Miles said.
