MICHAEL Garnham was photographing a sleepy pelican on the Noosa River when a troubled seagull stole his focus.

"It was around lunchtime when I spotted this beautiful pelican sleeping on the jetty handrail," he said.

"I stood there for an hour or more.

"I continued photographing, waiting for the pelican to eventually wake and take off when this one lone seagull landed right beside the pelican.

"It looked at me and back to the pelican numerous times, gave me what it seems was the opportunity to be able to tell this seagull's story in a photograph and then it simply flew away."

The Noosa photographer was moved by the experience.

"It was a day that I will never ever forget and an emotional experience that struck the very core of my heart and soul," he said. " … my picture tells the story.

"We all need to be more careful with how we discard things and keep in mind that we share this life and this Earth with others great and small because the impact carelessness can have is catastrophic."
