GOLF: Stanthorpe Golf Club will be the place to be this weekend as golfers gather for its annual carnival.

Stanthorpe Golf Club President Steve Kay said he was looking forward to the event. "Each club has an open each year,” Kay said.

Kay hoped for top weather conditions over the weekend.

He said the recent weather had left the greens in ideal condition for the event.

"The course is terrific after all this rain,” Kay said.

Kay said he was grateful for the support of the City Golf Club, based in Toowoomba.

He said the popular event was already packed with golfers.

"We're fully booked,” Kay said.

Kay said there would be 72 players on Saturday and 100 on Sunday.

"It's a really sought-after event,” he said.

Kay said about half of the carnival's competitors would be from the Stanthorpe region.

Saturday's game will be a four-ball shotgun start 4BBB Medley Stableford.

Sunday will feature an 18-hole single stroke for men and an 18-hole single Stableford for women.

Stanthorpe Golf Club coach Matt Waterworth said he and wife Nikki were keen to compete throughout the weekend.

"We're looking forward to it,” Waterworth said.

Waterworth said there would be men's A Grade, B Grade, C Grade and Veterans categories.

He said womens' categories would include Division 1, 2, 3 and Veterans.

Categories are set according to the AGU national handicap system.

He said players should arrive to the club by 11am Saturday, and by half an hour before their tee time on Sunday.

While a great game of golf will be the main attraction, Waterworth said many spent the whole weekend in the region, in a boost to the Granite Belt.

"A lot of them come down and make a weekend of it,” he said.

The event, at Stanthorpe Golf Club on Amosfield Rd, is also sponsored by Maddies Gift Gallery.
