Respect is heartfelt

IT MAY not have been the biggest wreath with the brightest flowers, but Zach Colless' hand-made masterpiece still took pride of place at the Warwick Cenotaph yesterday.

The five-year-old Warwick Central State School student made the paper wreath with his class this week and mum Tammy said he was eager to be a part of the Anzac Day ceremony.

"He just came to me and asked if he could lay it down too," she said.

Zach said he enjoyed making the wreath but it was hard work.

Warwick Tourism and Events CEO Tracy Vellacott - who co-ordinated services across the region - said gestures such as Zach's were present at every ceremony she attended yesterday.

"It comes in shapes and sizes whether it is the big wreath or the one crafted with fresh flowers... I ran across a little preppie at Scots (on Tuesday) and he had his own hand-made poppy he was wearing," she said.

Mrs Vellacott said it was the biggest turn out to the 11am service and Anzac Day parade she had seen in the past seven years.

"In the time I have been involved in co-ordinating the services, we have seen the number of people involved grow, especially students," she said.

"But (yesterday) just blew my mind. The number of students, they just kept coming and coming and I wasn't sure where I was going to fit all of them."

She said the highlight had been hearing young Warwick people speak at the services.

"I loved watching the (Freestone) primary school laying posies at the War Grave Cemetery," she said.

"And Brendan Babington (who played the Last Post and Reveille) bugled his way through five services.

"At the end of the day it's about the returned servicemen and to just see them stand there in formation... you sense their courage and their mateship."

A packed Leslie Park was addressed by Rev Kevin Stow - who was enlisted in the RAAF - and Member for Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg.
