FOR many people skydiving is a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

For Wade Edwards it's a chance to wear Australia's green and gold.

The Toogoolawah skydiver will represent Australia at in freestyle skydiving at the 2012 World Parachute Championships in Dubai next month.

Mr Edwards is one of the country's top skydivers, having been placed second at the Australia Parachute Championships.

From November 28 to December 9 Mr Edwards and his partner, Amandine Genin, will be in Dubai representing the Australia as part of the 2012 Australian Parachute Team.

His trip has had help from Somerset Regional Council, which gave the local skydiver a sports grant to get him to the world championships.

Mr Edwards applied for a Somerset Assistance Bursary to help fund part of his participation in the 12-day competition.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the council was happy to assist Mr Edwards in his attempt to become a world champion skydiver.

"On behalf of council we wish him all the success in Dubai," he said.

"We have some very talented sportsmen and women in our region and it's wonderful to see them applying to council for an assistance bursary, particularly when they are representing our region at an elite level."

The council chipped in with a $500 bursary to help Mr Edwards cover his expenses.
