Tough new child sex laws for offenders

CHILD sex offenders will face tougher penalties under proposed legislative reforms to the Criminal Code introduced to Parliament yesterday.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said the Newman Government had vowed to get tough on crime and sex offences committed against children were at the top of the list.

Under the changes offenders found guilty of offences against a child with a mental impairment would face up to life in jail, increased from the current penalty of 14 years.

The maximum penalty for child exploitation material offences would be raised from five to 14 years in jail and convictions for grooming a child would carry up to 10 years jail.
