EMILY Mannion first took part in Relay for Life when her mum was still fighting cancer.

Sadly, Shirlene lost her battle in 2010, only months before the 2010 Relay for Life.

Despite just losing her mother, the brave teenager managed to get together a team and walk in her mum's honour.

This year, Emily's team Shirlene Sunflowers will again take part in the annual Relay for Life fundraiser on July 28-29 in memory of her beloved mum.

The annual event raises much-needed funds for the Cancer Council and sees teams of up to 15 people keep a baton moving in a relay style walk over 18 hours.

Emily said the Shirlene Sunflowers team was hoping to raise $2000.

Emily said it had been very tough not having her mum around.

"My dad's the rock now. He's had to become the mum and dad of the family," she said.

As part of the lead up to Relay for Life, a special Purple Day will be held on July 13.

Organisers are asking teams to wear something purple and get the message out there about Relay for Life and the need for a cure.
