WITH a name like hyperbolic crochet, many people might be frightened off from picking up a needle but, in fact, lovers of the craft say it is simple to learn.

Warwick Art Gallery assistant Loretta Grayson said basic stitch knowledge was all participants needed for a fun two-day workshop 'Parallel Worlds' with Rita Summers.

“Workshop participants will have their artwork displayed at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney as part of the Sydney Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef project,” Mrs Grayson said.

“This large, magnificent crocheted installation brings together science, art, philosophy and environment.”

She said no experience was necessary as anyone could learn how to crochet a piece of reef and have it added to the installation.

“Warwick could be involved in this worldwide project. This kind of crochet has been used for lots of unusual things in science and mathematics,” she said.

“I have seen anatomical models done using hyperbolic crochet - including a crochet model of a brain.”

Local artist and Warwick Art Gallery volunteer Sue Marshman said this kind of crochet could be very creative.

“I don't have to have a set design or pattern. You can make complicated crochet forms in a simple way,” Mrs Marshman said.

“It's good; the average person can display their work as part of a big art installation in Sydney and also at the Jumpers and Jazz in July Festival.”
