WITH storms and flooding causing losses of over 400 million dollars a year, it will pay to be prepared for storms this season.
The lead up to storm season is the perfect time to prepare your home for possible damage says Executive General Manager Suncorp Personal Insurance Jason McCracken.
“Trim tree branches back well clear of your house and dispose of any loose debris from around the yard. Clean and check your roof, guttering and downpipes. Why not organise a street working bee and help out your neighbours?”
Mr McCracken also suggests the preparation of an emergency kit – including a battery powered radio, bottled water, torches, spare batteries and a list of emergency telephone numbers – and keep it in a safe but easily accessible place.
“Make sure all members of your family are aware of your community’s disaster plan. Check with your local council for details.
“Check your home building and contents insurance is up to date and that your level of cover is sufficient,” he said.
Mr McCracken also has these hints when a storm warning has been issued.
“Park your car under cover, away from trees if possible; Bring children and pets inside; Ensure any loose items in the yard or on balconies, such as outdoor furniture and bikes, are moved indoors or secured. Secure windows and glass doors with solid coverings or tape to prevent breakage. Most importantly, listen for storm warning updates on your local TV or radio station,” he said.
Jason’s other hints include:
During a storm:
• Disconnect all electrical appliances and listen to a battery powered radio for regular storm updates.
• In an electrical storm, remember to stay off the phone.
• Stay indoors (unless you are asked to evacuate), and keep well away from windows and doors.
• If you do need to evacuate, drive carefully as roads may be slippery or filled with debris.
• If you are caught outdoors, never shelter under trees.
After a storm:
• Beware of any structural damage, shattered glass or fallen power lines.
• Never drive through flooded roads.
• Don’t try to restore your own power – this should be done by a qualified electrician.
• If you do need to lodge a claim, contact your insurer as soon as possible.
