Wildcats in winning form

FOUR rounds into the 2009 Regional Basketball League and the Warwick Wildcats men's A-grade basketball combination remains undefeated and clearly in first position.

The Wildcats had their second home game of the season last weekend and played against their arch-rival Highfields.

Ever since the league was formed three years ago, Warwick and Highfields have gone above and beyond when they play each another.

This week's game was no different with all grades going up against Highfields. The weekend's round was also the first time this season the two A-grade men's teams have met since the grand final in 2008 when the Wildcats won by two points.

Despite being clearcut leaders of the competition, the Wildcats men realised they could not be complacent going into the Highfields game as they have a quality line-up.

The addition of big man Tony Holt into the Highfields line-up strengthened their inside game and added a much-needed 23 points. The Wildcats were ahead most of the game until a resilient Highfields team finally took the lead at the start of the fourth quarter.

That spurred the Cats on and from that point the Wildcats regained the lead and continued on until the end of the game.

In the end, the Wildcats took the game out 81-76.

On the back of new edition QBL Northside Wizards player Shane Davis, the Wildcats showed they are the team to beat in the 2009 season.

The two-metre Cats player dominated the scoring in the game with an impressive 41 points. In a tussle that should have seen the Wildcats win by at least 20 points, Davis was the standout.

Association president and Wildcats player Duncan McKenzie said the team was coming together well but he feared up and down starts were creeping into their game.

Other impressive players in the game were the ever reliable Eugene Bradshaw who dominated both offensive and defensive rebounds.
