HALFWAY through the Ag Requirements Regional Basketball League (ARRBL) season, the Warwick Wildcats open men's team remains undefeated after beating every team in the competition.
At the weekend, the Warwick team travelled to Stanthorpe for the local derby.
In the A-grade men's division, the Stanthorpe team is gaining a reputation of being the giant killers, after recently disposing of a full strength Lockyer Valley team. The game was destined to be the match of the round with the Wildcats sitting first on the ladder and Stanthorpe second.
It was the biggest crowd to date for a home game at Stanthorpe. The Wildcats knew they would need to come out of the blocks running to dominate the game from the beginning and get Stanthorpe on the back foot and that is exactly what they did with Eugene Bradshaw again dominating in the middle.
The match then moved into an exchange of three pointers that quickly turned into a shooting spectacular from both teams, a total of 20 three pointers were thrown during the game.
One of the highlights of the encounter was watching the big men from each team. Normally you would expect to see them fighting it out under the basket, but what was on show was one of the leading scorers in the QBL Shane Davis (Wildcats) and former NBL Gold Coast Blaze player Zac Carter (Stanthorpe) out on the perimeter shooting three pointers over the top of each other.
With Wildcats pair Mike McDaniel and Davis matching up with the Scorpions Steve Massey and Carter, the Wildcats game plan was to ensure the players coming off the bench dominated the Scorpions bench players.
Wildcats player Alex Cutmore had his best game of the season showing the determination that made him a marquee player in the 2008 U/19 championship team.
The Wildcats knew whatever the score was, Stanthorpe would not give up. This was reflected by the Scorpions bench players also stepping up. Solid performances from Col O'Brien and the McEvoy brothers, Chris and Brett, ensured Stanthorpe was in the game right to the end. In the end, the Wildcats showed why they are the number one team in the league by winning 104-95.
Wildcats player Duncan McKenzie said his team's season had started again with another round of matches.
“From this point on, our perspective is to stay focused, and to do that we must have the mindset of building our season again while we transition into the second phase,” McKenzie said.
“In our eyes we are zero wins and zero losses.”
The Wildcats are away to Tenterfield Bullets at 7pm Saturday. Warwick won the last clash against the Bullets by 42 points.
