Art prize a huge success

A HUGELY successful Scots PGC College Art Prize 2009 has been held at the weekend, with 159 artworks entered into the open section.

Julie Thomas took out the $2000 Hannas of Toowoomba Open Section with her painting, Road to Somewhere, while 2007 winner of the same section, Fiona Kennedy Altoft, came second with her piece Cool A Helicopter.

The Scots PGC College Parents and Friends Association president and art prize co-ordinator Susan Shaw said she was thrilled with how well the competition went.

“It really was a very positive event and we just received so much praise from people who know,” she said.

“I was very pleased with the feedback I’ve got from people who have exhibited in other places and they said the works were beautifully hung and well lit.”

In the Canning Downs South Student Section, Warwick State High School captain and 2007 winner Kirstin Payne won the $500 prize with her painting The Scream.

The Scots PGC College Year 9 student Amy Bradfield came second with her photograph, Unbreakable Bond.

Mrs Shaw said she hoped to make the art prize, which has now been run for a fourth time, a regular biennial fixture.

“We are looking to continue. The goal is to have it in another two years,” she said.
