Inspired women: (From left) Former Helana Jones Centre (HJC) manager Robyn Ernst, Zonta Club chairwoman Lois James, HJC manager Evelyn Holmes and general manager Tamara Bambrick and Zonta service and status of women committee member Faye Marley with breast cushions donated to the Southern Downs.
DEMONSTRATING illness knows no restrictions and kindness cannot be incarcerated, the women of the Warwick Work Camp and Brisbane-based correctional facility the Helana Jones Centre donated hand-crafted breast cushions for cancer sufferers to the Warwick Zonta Club.
“The breast cushions are special because they reduce pressure on women who have had a mastectomy,” Warwick Zonta Club chairwoman Lois James said.
“During operation some or most of their lymph nodes are removed,”
“We raise funds to purchase the special material and the ladies from Warwick Work Camp and the Helana Jones Centre hand-make the cushions for us.”
The women from Warwick Work Camp and Helana Jones Centre made 88 breast cushions which will be distributed around the Southern and Darling Downs and are in the process of creating more for the Granite Belt district.
“These cushions are something you can’t buy at the supermarket, these are specifically made for women who have had a mastectomy,” former Helana Jones Centre manager Robyn Ernst said.
“One lady incarcerated had breast cancer and said the cushion gave her great relief. That’s what we’re about, reparation, so the ladies give something back to the community and they respond positively.”
