CHRISTMAS holidaymakers have been encouraged to leave their homes as safe as possible before going away.
Executive General Manager Suncorp Personal Insurance Jason McCracken warns of the dangers of uninvited guests this summer season. “If you are going to be away from home over the festive season, make sure you leave your house and its contents protected from both the elements and unwanted intruders," Jason said.
“Don’t draw attention to the fact that your house is empty. Try and make arrangements with a friend or neighbour to collect your mail while you are away.
“Ask someone to mow your lawn if you’re going away for more than a couple of weeks, and maybe invest in a timer switch so that some lights come on of an evening automatically. Or even better, ask someone you know and trust to house-sit for you.
“Don’t leave valuable items unattended in your yard – the weather or thieves might end up taking advantage of your absence. But if something does happen, remember that Suncorp’s Classic home and contents insurance provides protection for things such as household tools, gardening equipment, plants in pots damaged in a storm, or stolen from your balcony, garden shed or backyard of your home,” he said.
Jason reminds Suncorp customers that if you are travelling with valuables, consider Suncorp Portable Cover to insure items away from home.
“Lost jewellery, stolen laptops and dropped cameras are examples of things that can take the fun out of a holiday. Suncorp has a variety of Portable Cover options, including bundled cover where you don’t always need to specify the exact items you want covered,” he added.
