Severe fire warning extended

A SEVERE fire weather warning has been extended from the weekend to today as fires were reported near Dalveen, Karara and Inglewood.

“Fire trucks were having trouble gaining access to a fire at Rizzato Road, Pozieres (near Dalveen),” a Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said yesterday.

“At last report, 10 acres (four hectares) were burning with a one metre flame height. No threat to homes.”

Four hectares was also burning at Bandicoot Gully at Karara yesterday with crews concerned the fire would jump across the road.

“They’re concerned if it goes across the road it will get into scrub land and they won’t be able to catch it,” the spokeswoman said yesterday afternoon.

Yesterday, there were reports of a grass fire at Tobacco Road at Inglewood.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said the current fire weather warning was “very high to severe” on the Southern Downs and Granite Belt today but the area had a chance of afternoon showers during the next two days.

“Conditions will be mostly fine today, tomorrow and Wednesday with a possibility of late afternoon or evening showers,” the spokesman said.

“Tuesday could see some thunderstorms.”

Temperature wise, the mercury will hover around 30 degrees.
