Hot rodders weekend

THE Southern Downs Rodders will host the annual Rods over the Gap this weekend in Warwick.

The event starts on Friday night with a bench session (talk and a few drinks) at the Slade campus.

On Saturday, the public are welcome to inspect the hot rods at the Warwick Credit Union Show and Shine at Leslie Park from 8.30am to 10.30am.

The drivers then leave on an observation run to Leslie Dam for lunch and have a free afternoon, possibly with some drag racing at Morgan Park before dinner at Slade Campus.

The event finishes with a breakfast at Slade Campus, presentations and farewells.

The first game of the day will be the under-18 clash between Warwick and Fassifern at 3pm.

The Cowboys will play Fassifern in reserve grade at 4.30pm before hosting Aspley in a C-grade game at 6.30pm.

The match of the day will be at 7.15pm between the Cowboys and Aspley.

Mustangs win team of the year

THE South West Mustangs under-14 rugby league team has won the 2009 Sports Darling Downs Team of the Year award.

The Southern Downs connection is trainer Michael Coombes, of Warwick, and two Allora officials, team runner Glen Brown and Glyn Rees, who was overall manager of the three South West teams at the championships.

Coombes said the boys deserved the win for the way they played as a team rather than as individuals.

“They were the only team in three carnival age groups to win each of their five games.”
