ONLY one open bull rider in a field of 15 made time at the St Mary’s Bull and Bronc Bonanza on Saturday night.

St Mary’s principal John O’Connor said the crowd was up on the first two school rodeos.

“It was a good family night and the crowd was well behaved,” Mr O’Connor said.

The mutton busters for young children was one of the highlights of the night. Each child received a participation certificate even if they hit the sand before the bell.

The crowd voted for the winners of the children’s dancing exhibition between events in the main arena.

Former Warwick cowboy Darryl Bunyan won the saddle bronc ride with a score of 80 on Miss Juicy.

Darryl Roberts was second with 76 and Warwick rider Michael Maher third on 70.

Lucas Wilson, who performed well in the United States last year, drew former racehorse Aussie Sunset but didn’t make time.

Kris Grayson, of Honky Tonk, rated the bucking effort by Aussie Sunset as the best of his three performances so far.

“Some bucking horses get easier to ride after a couple of trips but Aussie Sunset seems to be getting stronger (harder),” Mrs Grayson said.

Reigning NRA champion Casey Morris won the open bull ride on Patch of Heaven.

Former St Mary’s student Callum Miller was a popular winner of the junior steer ride.

Mrs Grayson said there were no major injuries.
