Accident brings race to a halt

QUEENSLAND driver Bob Heagerty experienced what every motor racing driver dreads, car damage in the first 200 metres of the Jack Lacey Trophy Race yesterday.

Queensland driver Bob Heagerty (7) suffers damage to his car at Morgan Park Raceway yesterday.

QUEENSLAND driver Bob Heagerty experienced what every motor racing driver dreads, car damage in the first 200 metres of the Jack Lacey Trophy Race for group N cars at the National Historic Meeting at Morgan Park Raceway yesterday.

With Russell Wright and V8 Supercar driver Glenn Seton at the front of the grid, the problem was further back in the field and one car was in the grass soon after the start of the race.

Heagerty is a regular at Morgan Park Raceway and his 1972 Mazda RX2 will need a lot of repair work before racing again.

Due to the crash, in which Heagerty walked away uninjured, the race was stopped in the first lap and the meeting held up for 15 minutes until the track was cleared.

The crash didn’t worry Seton who had a better start the second time on the grid and took an early lead which he increased during the 12-lap event to win easily.

Historic Racing Car Club of Queensland secretary Alan Steel said the weekend meeting, which was dubbed Historic Warwick, was the biggest to be held on the raceway.

“It is also the biggest interstate contingent we have attracted,” Steel said.

Morgan Park Raceway is now the home of the historic nationals.
