THEY say a picture can tell a thousand words, and in this case it can also tell about 150 years.

The Legacy of Light is a five-generation photography exhibition, run by keen photographers and members of the Roggencamp and Doody family, and will inhabit the Warwick Art Gallery for the next five weeks.

Christopher Roggencamp moved to Warwick from Germany in 1863, and by 1865 he had set up a photography studio on Albion St, where the library now stands.

Since then, his family has travelled the world, snapping away with their DSLRs.

They too developed a talent and passion for photography.

John Doody, one of the artists displaying his work at the exhibition, said it was a way to see the development of photography over the decades.

"People can see photography in all stages of development over the years," Mr Doody said.

Gallery director Karina Devine said the exhibition was free to view and an experience not to be missed.

"It's designed so you flow through the generations," Ms Devine said.

The Legacy of Light opens today, but the official opening is at 4pm on Saturday.

VIEWING TIMES

Official opening: 4pm Saturday.

Gallery hours: Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm.

Saturday and Sunday: 10am to 1pm.
