10 things to do around Warwick these school holidays

THERE'S no need to twiddle your thumbs these school holidays with plenty of action taking place around Warwick.

Meet a former Olympian, enjoy some music or take a road trip over the next couple of weeks to make the most of new events and old favourite attractions around town.

1. Pick up basketball tips from former Olympian

BUDDING basketballers can brush up on dribbling and shooting skills in a free clinic with former Olympic basketballer Danny Morseu (pictured) at WIRAC.

Centre manager David Jordan said it was unusual to have an opportunity to learn from a high-calibre player, who is also the head coach of the Toowoomba Mountaineers, at zero cost.

"Danny's a great coach, he's in the hall of fame in Australian basketball and he's a bit of a legend,” he said.

Mr Jordan said the session was designed to nurture grassroots basketball in Warwick.

The clinic will be held for players aged 13 and older on Wednesday, July 11, from 2-5pm.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own basketball if they have one.

2. Rock out with top singer

GOLDEN Guitar winner Amber Lawrence will delight young and old when she performs at the Granite Belt Christmas Farm.

To celebrate Christmas in July, the talented performer will sing favourites and Christmas tunes.

Head along on July 7, gates will open at 321 Aerodrome Rd, Applethorpe, at 12.30pm.

3. Admire some great artwork

GET a creative fix by paying a visit to the Warwick Art Gallery where there are two exhibitions on display.

You can view The Cattle Dog Printmakers and Shifts by Clinton Baker until July 7.

Visit between 10am-4pm on Tuesday to Sunday.

4. Make a sandy creation

SANDIWIZARD is paying a visit to Rose City Shoppingworld to teach children a quirky new colouring technique.

Children will receive an artwork and learn how to bring it to life using brightly coloured sand.

Everyone who gets involved will have their design laminated so they can take it home as a keepsake.

Kids can take part in the creative sessions outside Priceline Pharmacy from 10am-4pm from Monday July 9 until Friday July 13.

All the materials needed are supplied and no bookings are required.

Participation is free.

5. Climb the rock wall

REACH new heights will rock climbing at WIRAC.

Running every Tuesday and Thursday from 10.30am-noon over the holidays, children can climb the wall and then enjoy a swim.

Cost is $6 a child.

6. Enjoy an early Christmas

DRESS up the children in festive gear and head to The Criterion in Warwick for Christmas in July on Saturday.

Children in outfits will receive a present from Santa, while the family can enjoy a Christmas lunch or dinner for $20.

Children under 12 are free.

The night will be held at 84 Palmerin St and kick on with tunes from DJ Big Dawg from 8.30pm.

7. Take a step back in time

GET a glimpse into what life was like when some of the first settlers arrived in the region.

Glengallan Homestead is a beautifully restored building just outside Warwick at 18515 New England Highway that is more than 150 years old.

The accompanying heritage centre gives detailed background information into the historic site.

Both are open Wednesdays to Sundays from 10am-4pm.

8. Chill out with hit movies

CHECK out the latest Fetch children's television shows and movies in the Optus Chill Out Zone Tent at Rose City Shoppingworld.

With movies streaming from 10am-4pm, children can pull up a chair and take in the viewing and do some free colouring in.

The chill out tent is outside Optus until Friday.

9. See a natural wonderland

JUMP in the car for a short road trip to visit the incredible sights at Girraween National Park.

Located 40km south of Stanthorpe, the park is known for its dramatic landscape and balancing boulders.

There are also clear streams, beautiful open forests and walking tracks to major features including The Sphinx and Turtle Rock.

You could also stop in at Sutton's Farm for a piece of apple pie on the way home.

10. Get a great happy snap
