150 km police chase ends in arrests

TWO people have been arrested after a police chase covering more than 150 km of highway near the New South Wales and Queensland border.

The chase started just after 8 am on Tuesday morning when officers travelling south on the Pacific Highway near Illuka were notified of a stolen car travelling in the opposite direction.

Police attempted to stop the BMW sedan but it allegedly sped away.

Police initiated an unsuccessful pursuit which was stopped near Woodburn due to the driving of the BMW.

As the BMW continued to travel north, a second pursuit was launched by police at Broadwater.

Several road spikes were deployed however the driver continued to keep control of the car and travel north.

The BMW stopped about 5km south of the Queensland border and the driver and passenger, both from Woodridge, were arrested.

The car was reported stolen from Southport on September 16.

The pair, a man and a women were taken to Tweed Heads Police Station where they were interviewed and charged.

The 24-year-old man was charged with two counts of police pursuit, two counts of drive manner dangerous and possessing property stolen outside of New South Wales.

The 24-year-old woman was charged with three New South Wales warrants and possessing property stolen outside of New South Wales.

Both appeared at Tweed Heads Local Court this afternoon and were refused bail.

No one was injured during the incident.
