150 reasons to celebrate a grand Warwick building
ONE of Warwick most beautiful and historic buildings will mark its eminent history in Warwick with grand celebrations this weekend.
.
St Mark's Anglican Church has been an iconic feature of the Rose City for 150 years and is one of the region's most widely photographed buildings.
Extensive renovations have seen the sandstone church restored to prime condition for its birthday celebrations.
Events will be held across the weekend beginning with the launch on Friday night from 5.30pm.
On Saturday night, dignitaries including the Archbishop of Brisbane Phillip Aspinall and Governor of Queensland Paul de Jersey AC will be in attendance at a special dinner at the Abbey of the Roses.
On Sunday morning, a celebratory mass will be held at the church, presided over by the Archbishop.
Parish priest Reverend Rod Winterton said the milestone was a huge occasion for the community, with past clergy returning for the event.
"The connections with this building reach not only through the fabric of Warwick, much further,” he said.
"Every week we have people who come through with stories about their grandparents being married here, or they were baptised here.
"There are thousands upon thousands of links to this historic building and its place in the history of Warwick.
"And I think that's really what we're celebrating.”
A book chronicling the history of the church in Warwick will be launched tomorrow night in St Mark's Hall.
The book, Living Stones - 150 years of St Mark's Warwick, was compiled by parishioners Doug and Anne Wilson and Ian and Sue Nalder, and printed by Creed and Lang.
