$60,000 on offer at 150th Cup

THIS year’s 150th Warwick Cup is set to be the biggest race meeting in the history of Allman Park, with organisers aiming to break the magical 4000-spectator mark.

Earlier this week major sponsors Frasers Livestock Transport and the Warwick Credit Union decided to double their sponsorship for the October event, and all other sponsors from last year will increase their contributions.

The Melbourne Cup will also celebrate its 150th this year – but the Warwick Cup has pipped it by one month to the magical milestone.

Warwick Turf Club vice president Jim Costello said there would be more than $60,000 in prize money up for grabs for the six-race program – which includes a huge $20,000 for the Warwick Cup.

The Warwick Cup is now firmly branded as one of Queensland’s richest and most respected race meetings.

Last year crowd numbers to the event swelled by almost 40 per cent to a record of more than 3000 people.

After the success of last year’s marquee, the Warwick Turf Club will bring back the popular addition again this October and already more than half of the seats have been pre-sold.

Frasers Livestock Transport director Peter Fraser said they made the decision to double their commitment to help make this year’s Warwick Cup the best yet.

He said that country racing relied on the support from its sponsors.

“Frasers has sponsored the Warwick Cup for many years,” Peter said.

Warwick Turf Club committee member Warwick Fraser said had the Warwick Cup been run every year since it began, it would actually be past the 150-year mark now, but said hurdles like equine influenza intervened.

“One of the major goals for the Warwick Turf Club in 2010 is to make the 150th running of the Cup bigger and better than ever,” Warwick said.

“In 2010 our major sponsors of Warwick Credit Union, Frasers Livestock Transport, Warwick Vet Clinic, Paul Morrissey Optometrists, Gross Wholesale Meats, Black Toyota, John Duggan Amcal Chemist, Warwick Hotel and Carlton have generously increased their level of support to help boost race prize money, increase marketing/promotion and advertising as well as adding new entertainment on the day.”

He said Warwick Credit Union and Frasers were the first to “kick the can” by doubling their cash support.

Warwick said this year they would hold the fashions on the field competition again and said they were almost ready to announce the 2010 Warwick Cup Ambassador.
