2000 flock to region for Rosebowl carnival

WARWICK Polocrosse will host the Australian Squad Challenge and Rosebowl Carnival next weekend, from August 19-21.

Warwick Polocrosse president Les Fraser said the carnival was first played in 1962, the same year the club grounds moved to Morgan Park.

Nominations will be open until Wednesday but Mr Fraser said between 60 and 70 club teams were expected at the IOR Rosebowl Club competition.

"On Friday night we have the Australian Squad Challenge with four teams - two men's and two ladies' - playing,” Mr Fraser said.

"These are Australia's best players according to national selectors, who will be on the look-out for players for the Barastoc competition next April and the World Cup in 2019.

"It should be a really strong club competition as well - Tansey and Cunningham have been strong in the men's and mixed and last year's winners Wandoan have been another strong club in the open competition.”

Mr Fraser said the event would draw hundreds of spectators.

"This is two weeks out from the club championships at Wandoan in early September so it's always a great event,” he said.

"Due to the large number of clubs, we usually see between 1500 and 2000 people over the three days.”

The Australian Squad Challenge will be played under lights from 6pm on Friday, with games from 8am on Saturday and Sunday.

Finals will start at noon on Sunday, followed by presentations after 3pm.

There will be entertainment on Friday and Saturday night, and The Clubhouse Cafe will open from 5pm Friday and 7am Saturday and Sunday.
