2012 a year for girls in region
IF THE old wives' tales are anything to go by, about 95% of Southern Downs' mothers' bellies would have been sitting high last year with 94 girls being born compared to only 11 boys.
Warwick Hospital director of nursing Megan O'Shannessy said the large difference was just a coincidence.
The statistics were revealed by the Department of Births, Deaths and Marriages at the same time as the most popular baby names across the Southern Downs were released.
The most popular boys' name last year, with four babies (whose mother resided in postcodes 4370 and 4380 at the time of the baby's birth) being dubbed Declan.
This was closely followed by Joseph and Levi at three apiece.
There was a three-way tie when it came to girls' names between Willow, Alayna and Grace.
Each of these names were shared by two others.
This means not one of the 88 remaining girls share the same name.
Across Queensland the most popular girls' name was Ruby; of which there was one in the region.
When it comes to picking a name everyone has their own procedure.
Some opt to name their children after actors, artists or famous actors' and artists' children.
New parents Holly and Noo Shepherd had an interesting way of deciding their newborn's name.
"Parker is Holly's maiden name," Noo said.
"As she took my surname we chose to name our baby Parker."
