30-somethings have it toughest

THEY'RE the busiest of us all, they're burdened by the most financial stress and they're breeding like it's going out of style.

Meet Generation B.

This new species falls within both the Gen Y and Gen X category, being those aged in their 30s.

Research by the Suncorp Group revealed it was the trifecta of high mortgage debt, young families and peak work demands that was sending Gen B-ers grey from stress at an alarming rate, granting them a sub-generation all of their very own.

Warwick Credit Union CEO Lewis von Stieglitz agreed with the study's revelations and said the Warwick community was a clear example of Gen B in action.

"It's certainly the case for these people in this age group who, for a big part, are first home buyers and have a new family," he said.

Suncorp's Head of Everyday Super Lisa Harrison said Gen Bs were the hardest working generation in the country with 62% in full-time work, compared to 53% for Gen X, 49% for Gen Y and 36% for Baby Boomers.

"Gen Bs typically have more mortgage debt than any other age group, as they trade up the property ladder to cater for a growing family," Ms Harrison said this week.

"In contrast, many Generation Ys in their 20s don't have children or a mortgage yet, while older Gen X-ers in their 40s are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, with reduced mortgages and children who are beginning to fend for themselves."

Mr von Stieglitz encouraged everyone to simply hang in there.

"It is one of those things that you've got to just stick with and try and hang on, because there is a light at the end of the tunnel."
