30 teams likely for Aust Day carnival
THIRTY teams will play in the annual Australia Day Cricket Carnival on January 21-22.
The Twenty20 format proved popular last year. It means three teams will play round-robins at each ground on the first day.
Previous winners Bears Small's XI, Maryvale Condamine, Stunned Mullets, Jonesy's XI and last year's winner Doc's XI have nominated.
Teams set to challenge the favourites are Max's XI, Goomeri Giants, Badzy's Bandits and Rettke's XI. The Scots College Past Students side is a new team.
Likely carnival players include Dean Butler (former Kookaburra hockey half), Delissa Kimmince (Australian women's cricket player), Andrew McCullough (Brisbane Broncos), Mark Steketee (Australian U19 cricket) and John Cleary (Queensland Country cricket).
The 2012 carnival also sees the return of the Long Throw competition, to be held at 4.30pm on the Sunday after the grand final at Slade Park and before presentations. The throwing competition is open to anyone, not just players, and nominations can be made at the ground from 4pm.
With honours much sought after, the winners will collect prize money, a trophy and medallions.
Prize money will be given to the top four teams of the carnival, as well as individual awards for best batting, bowling and all rounder.
A total of $2000 cash and prizes will be on offer.
