TWO third-generation players won junior encouragement awards at the south-east Queensland polocrosse awards at the City Golf Club in Toowoomba.

The awards dinner followed the zone annual general meeting at the weekend.

Warwick club members Paul McGrath and Stephanie Thorsby won the Australian Stock Horse awards for best combinations with their horses on a night where most of the major awards were won by players from the Warwick, Cunningham and Clifton clubs.

McGrath's daughter Jordan, and Anthony Wells won junior encouragement awards. Jordan's parents have both played for Australia and three grandparents - Leo McGrath, Gordon and Sue Nott - also played the game. Leo still plays for the Toowoomba club.

Anthony's father Kent Wells represented Australia and his mother Libby is a south-east zone representative. His grandfather, Barry Wells, was a long-time player for both Warwick and Cunningham clubs.

After first playing sub-junior polocrosse at the age of four, Anthony graduated to juniors and made his state debut for a winning Queensland team last year in the Australian Junior Polocrosse Titles at Albury.

He said it was cool being a third-generation player.

"My dad teaches me a lot about the sport and gets my team hyped up and ready for our games," Anthony said.

"I remember my grandfather encouraging me at carnivals."

He has his polocrosse future well mapped out.

"I am aiming to captain an Australian team, if I am lucky," he said.

"My dad says if I want to achieve my goal, I have to put in more work than other players and train rain, hail or shine."

Monday is rest day for his horse, Rusky, but every other day he is in the saddle.

"It is either a game on our practice field for 30 to 45 minutes or seven laps of a 3km course to get the muscles of the horse warmed up," Anthony said.

"You must have a fit horse to play polocrosse."

His next ambition in polocrosse is to make the Queensland junior team for the 2014 nationals in Darwin.

Anthony and Jordan have played in the Warwick junior team all season which won five carnivals in B grade.

At the AGM, Ken Shepherd was appointed patron with Charlie Brook (Warwick) president and Robyn Cooper (Cunningham) secretary.
