Lifetime of community service

HUSBAND and wife volunteering duo Trevor and Margaret Sheeran have been donating their time to the Warwick community for more than 40 years.

As active volunteers for both Blue Care and the Warwick Lions Club, they have contributed to various committees, auxiliaries and services.

"I've been working with Blue Care for a long time," Mrs Sheeran said.

"I was on the Blue Care auxiliary and then the Blue Care committee, and every week we spend our Thursdays volunteering down at the centre."

The couple also fill their week with other volunteer commitments such as fundraising activities for Blue Care and the Lions Club.

Acknowledging the couple's efforts is Blue Care Warwick's service manager Sue Hoopmann.

"They work tirelessly and are dedicated, committed and amazing workers," Mrs Hoopmann said.

Mrs Sheeran said it was nice to be able to help someone else.

"We had the time so we figured we would help," she said.

"The community has been good to us so we decided it would be nice to return the goodwill."

Mr Sheeran, a lifetime member of the Warwick Lions Club, has served as president twice and as secretary and treasurer for several years.

During his first term as president in 1971, Mr Sheeran led the fundraising for the original Blue Care building on Grafton St and in 1972 saw to its construction.

When it was time for an upgrade, the couple were involved in fundraising and the building process for the Law Rd centre.

"We had a committee of about eight or nine members," Mrs Sheeran said.

"It was a lot of hard work but obviously worth it in the end."

Mr Sheeran has also been a lead fundraiser for the annual cubby house raffle, something the couple have been working on for months.

"Trevor has been going around getting timber and roofing donations and this morning we were at the woodcrafters to make sure its move to the shopping centre went smoothly," Mrs Sheeran said.

"The Warwick Woodcrafters have been amazing helping with this and we are extremely grateful for their contribution."

She said it was initiatives like the cubby house raffle that allowed Blue Care to be better funded.

"The extra money allows for the purchase of specialised equipment to help the clients and means that Blue Care can continue to provide the service they do."
