Meatworker Torin faces unemployment due to 457 Visa workers

THIRD-generation meatworker Torin O'Brien has vented his frustrations about Rockhampton companies employing 457 Visa holders ahead of Australians.

Mr O'Brien became a meatworker at 15, because that is what his grandfather and father both did - it was in the blood.

"My granddad was the boning room foreman at the old meatworks in Rockhampton in the 70s, and dad has worked around Australia."

"I started work in Melbourne before moving to Rockhampton where I worked at JBS Meatworks for four years," Mr O'Brien said.

Despite suffering three work-related injuries and as a result, undergoing three surgeries, Mr O'Brien returned to the meatworks in Melbourne, before moving back to Rockhampton at the start of May.

Since his return, Mr O'Brien has applied at Rockhampton's two major meatworks, Teys Australia and JBS, whenever they advertised for skilled and unskilled workers.

"Both companies have advertised in the last month, and I have applied at Teys four times, and twice at JBS. JBS sent me a letter saying I was unsuccessful as I did not meet the required skill level and I rang Teys, who said they would get back to me in two weeks if they were interested...I never heard back."

The disgruntled 26-year-old said he was an A-rate worker with over 10 years experience in various departments of the meatworks, he was more than qualified for the advertised jobs.

Adding to his frustrations, Mr O'Brien's friends working at the meatworks had told him that jobs were being filled with 457 Visa holders.
