$5000 grants up for grabs for groups on the Downs
COMMUNITY groups on the Southern Downs are being encouraged to apply for the Federal Government's Volunteer Grants program.
Applicants have until December 9 to apply for up to $5000 to assist volunteer work in the community.
Maranoa MP Bruce Scott said eligible organisations would receive between $1000 and $5000 to make volunteer work easier and safer.
"Community organisation can use these grants to help with costs incurred by volunteers - like the cost of fuel to take seniors to see a doctor, first-aid training, background security checks or transport for volunteers with disability who cannot drive," he said.
"Organisations can also purchase much-needed equipment, such as computers or printers so they can keep pace with technology."
Mr Scott said the grants would give priority to groups working with individuals or communities experiencing disadvantage.
Communities affected by natural disasters would be high on the list.
"Volunteers are the backbone of our community and this is a great initiative, where local organisations can now apply for grants to help support the valuable work by volunteers who give their time to help others and encourage the inclusion of vulnerable people in community life," he said.
Applications close December 9. Visit www.dss.gov.au /grants for more information.
